Visa Options to Become a Permanent Resident of Australia

Australia is one of the most sought-after destinations for skilled professionals, families, and entrepreneurs worldwide. With its high standard of living, global career opportunities, and direct pathway to citizenship, becoming a Permanent Resident (PR) of Australia is a life-changing opportunity

At Voyager Compass Consultancy, we simplify this journey by matching your profile, skills, and aspirations with the right PR pathway. Our guidance is always aligned with the official Department of Home Affairs framework — so you can move forward with confidence.

Main PR Pathways

Skilled Migration Visas

Skilled Independent Visa (Subclass 189)

A points-tested permanent visa for highly skilled workers. No employer or state sponsorship is required. You simply lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) in SkillSelect, and if invited, you can apply directly for PR.
Skilled Nominated Visa (Subclass 190)
Similar to Subclass 189, but here you are nominated by an Australian state or territory. Nomination not only boosts your chances of selection but also awards additional points.
Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) Visa (Subclass 491)
A regional pathway for applicants ready to live and work outside major cities. Granted for up to 5 years, with eligibility to apply for PR (Subclass 191) after meeting work and residency requirements for at least 3 years.

Employer-Sponsored PR Visas

Employer Nomination Scheme (Subclass 186)
A permanent visa for skilled workers nominated by an Australian employer. Available under the Direct Entry stream (for highly skilled applicants) and the Temporary Residence Transition stream (for those already working in Australia on a 482 visa).
Business & Innovation Visas

Business Innovation & Investment (Subclass 188 → 888)

Start with a provisional Subclass 188 visa and progress to permanent residency (Subclass 888) after meeting business turnover, investment, and residence requirements. This option suits entrepreneurs, senior executives, and investors.
Global Talent Visa (Subclass 858) (also known as National Innovation Visa)
A prestigious PR pathway for highly skilled individuals, researchers, investors, and entrepreneurs working in Australia’s priority sectors such as technology, energy, health, AgTech, FinTech, and advanced manufacturing. This visa offers a direct permanent residency route, without the need for points-testing, state nomination, or employer sponsorship.
Family & Partner Visas

Partner Visa (Subclass 820/801 onshore, 309/100 offshore)

A two-stage pathway: first a temporary partner visa, then progression to a permanent partner visa once the relationship and time criteria are met. This option reunites families and allows couples to build their lives together in Australia.

Points System & Selection

Most skilled PR visas (189, 190, 491) operate under a points-based system. Points are awarded for

  • Age
  • English language ability
  • Skilled work experience
  • Educational qualifications
  • Australian study or work experience
  • State/territory nomination or sponsorship
A minimum of 65 points is required to lodge an Expression of Interest, but higher scores improve your chances of receiving an Invitation to Apply (ITA).
